Horizon 2020
Horizon 2020 is the largest research and innovation program ever carried out by the EU. It will lead to more world-class innovations, breakthroughs, and world premieres, bringing the great ideas from laboratories to the market. EUR 80 billion of funding is available for 7 years (2014-2020) – in addition to the private investment and national public investment that this funding will attract.
Horizon 2020 benefits from the political support of European leaders and MEPs who agreed that investing in research and innovation is key to Europe’s future by putting them at the heart of the Europe 2020 strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. Horizon 2020 contributes to achieving this goal by combining research and innovation and focusing on three key areas: scientific excellence, leadership in the industrial sector and societal challenges.
The aim is to ensure Europe’s capacity to produce world-class science and technology to stimulate economic growth.
Thanks to EU funding for research under previous framework programs, scientists and industry representatives in Europe and around the world have joined efforts to find solutions to a wide range of challenges. Their innovations have helped to improve the standard of living, protect the environment and increase the sustainability and competitiveness of European industry. Horizon 2020 is open to researchers from all over the world.
Their experience was essential for the development of this pioneering program – the Commission collected the feedback received and took into account the recommendations of the Member States and the European Parliament as well as the lessons learned from previous programs. The message was clear – Horizon 2020 must be simpler for users – and it is!
